Flame emission spectroscopy gives a line spectrum that identifies metal ions and can measure concentration from intensity.

Clean the wire between tests. Concentrated HCl helps make volatile chlorides

Grade 2–3: Put a little on a wire in a blue flame. Yellow is sodium, green is copper, lilac is potassium.

Grade 5–6: I can list all five colours and I clean the wire.

Grade 9: I know the test is qualitative, and I use that limitation to introduce flame emission spectroscopy.
