Flame emission spectroscopy gives a line spectrum that identifies metal ions and can measure concentration from intensity.

Common mistakes
- Instrumental analysis is not a replacement for knowing wet tests. The paper still asks flame colours, NaOH precipitates, gas tests and Rf.
- A dirty wire that last tested sodium will give a yellow flame for everything. Learn the five colours - instruments do not let you skip them.
- Do not write that flame emission spectroscopy replaces the need to learn flame colours. It is the instrumental version of the same chemistry.
- Do not claim instruments are always better. A calibrated machine that is broken, or an uncalibrated one, is worse than a careful wet test.
