- Starting with “My name is x and I am 15” wastes the drop. Start in the weather, the room, the waiting.
- Five shifts in three pages is panic. One or two is control.
- A twist that needs three extra pages (“and then aliens”) will not be finished. Finish small.
- A nameless “you” can work for description (see the marsh extract) but is harder for a plotty story. Choose on purpose.
