Common mistakes
- Writing “the writer uses a simile in line 1” on Q3 is answering Q2. You may mention a method only to explain a structural job (“the opening simile establishes sympathy before we meet Maya”).
- “The ending is effective” is Grade 2. Effective at what — mystery, relief, dread, comedy?
- Juxtaposition is not “there are two characters”. Say what the pairing does.
- Retelling the plot in order is not Q3. “Then Maya sat down, then she counted, then he woke” is a Grade 2 story. Add “so that the reader…” every time.
