Common mistakes
- A plot dump from the opening to the ending, with no question word, is a Grade 2–3 answer wearing a lot of ink. Underline the question. Only tell the story that proves it.
- A “how far is Birling responsible?” essay that never reaches Sheila, Eric, Gerald, Mrs B, and the ending has not answered “how far”.
- A theme dump that ignores the question fails AO1 no matter how many quotations you own.
- A paragraph on 1912 fashion or Priestley’s birth year unlocks nothing. “Unsinkable” plus a 1945 audience who know the iceberg unlocks Birling. “Fire and blood and anguish” plus two world wars unlocks the Inspector’s prophecy.
