Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, states of matter, giant structures and nanoparticles

The short version

Bonding and structure decide melting point, hardness and whether a substance conducts. Giant lattices behave very differently from small molecules.

Key idea

ionic = electron transfer from metal to non-metal

Oppositely charged ions attract (electrostatic force)

Grade 2–3: The metal gives electrons away. The bits then stick because plus and minus attract.

Grade 5–6: I can draw the idea of Na^+ and Cl^− and say high melting point because of strong forces.

Grade 9: Dot-and-cross: outer shell only, brackets and charges. I never draw a line between Na and Cl (that looks covalent). Mark scheme: ions can move, not electrons can move.

covalent = shared pair of electrons (non-metals)

Single = one pair; double = two pairs (O2, CO2); triple = three (N2)

Grade 2–3: Non-metals share electrons. Water and oxygen are made of little molecules.

Grade 5–6: I can say shared pair, name a double bond, and say simple molecules do not conduct.

Grade 9: I never write weak covalent bonds for a low boiling point. Outer electrons only on a dot-and-cross. Giant covalent is the other covalent story (next lessons).
