Transition metals form ions with different charges, coloured compounds and catalysts. Nanoparticles have very high SA:V and special uses and risks.

Grade 2–3: Transition metals live in the middle of the table. They are tougher than the Group 1 metals that fizz on water.

Grade 5–6: I can name Fe, Ni and Cu and say high melting point, hard, less reactive than Group 1.

Grade 9: I write a property-by-property contrast and I mention variable ion charge. I never call aluminium a transition metal just because it is a useful metal.

Name the metal, the colour, and that the catalyst is not used up

Grade 2–3: Transition-metal stuff is often colourful. A catalyst helps the reaction but is still there afterwards.

Grade 5–6: I can name a coloured copper or iron compound and say ions can have different charges.

Grade 9: I pair Fe^2+ / Fe^3+ with colour and I define a catalyst without saying it is a reactant. I never call NaCl a typical coloured transition-metal compound.
