Finite and renewable resources, potable water, waste water, life cycle assessment, recycling, corrosion and alloys
The short version
Potable water is not the same as pure water — it is safe to drink. LCA looks at a product from raw materials to disposal. Alloys are mixtures of metals with better properties.
Key idea
Name one finite and one renewable in any 2-mark definition
Grade 2–3: Oil and metal ores will run out. Wood can grow again if we plant trees.
Grade 5–6: I can define both words with examples and I know fresh water can still be scarce.

What the examiner wants
Required practical: distill salt water and test pH / boiling point. Waste water: screening, sedimentation, aerobic treatment, anaerobic sludge digestion. Sacrificial protection uses a more reactive metal.

Common mistakes
- Renewable does not mean infinite right now. Overfishing and deforestation can still destroy a renewable resource.
- Boiling at home kills microbes but does not remove most dissolved salts. Potable is not chemically pure.
- Do not swap aerobic and anaerobic. Sludge digestion is anaerobic; the effluent treatment tanks are aerobic.
- An LCA is not the same as a price tag. Cheap can still be environmentally costly. Do not quote only the stage that makes your product look good.
