Using resources: GCSE Combined Science

Finite and renewable resources, potable water, waste water, life cycle assessment, recycling, corrosion and alloys

The short version

Potable water is not the same as pure water — it is safe to drink. LCA looks at a product from raw materials to disposal. Alloys are mixtures of metals with better properties.

Key idea

finite: will run out / used faster than it forms | renewable: can be replaced at the rate we use it (if managed)

Name one finite and one renewable in any 2-mark definition

Grade 2–3: Oil and metal ores will run out. Wood can grow again if we plant trees.

Grade 5–6: I can define both words with examples and I know fresh water can still be scarce.

Grade 9: A 4-mark evaluate wants an advantage, a disadvantage, and a conclusion with a reason. Renewable does not mean infinite right now.

Go a bit deeper

potable = safe to drink, not chemically pure H2O

UK: choose a low-contamination source → sand filter beds → sterilise

Grade 2–3: Safe to drink is not the same as pure water with nothing in it. Chlorine kills germs.

Grade 5–6: I can name filtration and chlorination, and I know sea water needs extra energy to remove salt.

Grade 9: A full RP answer names a test for the distillate (no crystals / no chloride ppt / BP near 100 °C), not just we distilled it.

Lessons in this topic

  1. Finite and renewable resources
  2. Potable water (required practical)
  3. Waste water
  4. Life cycle assessment
  5. Recycling
  6. Corrosion and alloys (Combined)

In the app each lesson is video (when we have a real YouTube id) then intro, learn and summary steps.

What the examiner wants

Required practical: distill salt water and test pH / boiling point. Waste water: screening, sedimentation, aerobic treatment, anaerobic sludge digestion. Sacrificial protection uses a more reactive metal.

Frequently asked questions

Is GCSE Using resources on Combined Science and Triple?

Using resources is on Combined Science and on Triple Chemistry. Progress is shared in the ReviseEasy app.

Which exam board is this Using resources page for?

The ideas are board-agnostic for AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CCEA. Paper lengths and question numbers differ — check your specification.

Is Using resources Foundation or Higher?

The core ideas appear on both tiers. Higher papers add extra application and some HT-only detail, marked in lessons with a Higher badge.
